Year 5 - Kestrels and Eagles
Summer term
Dear Parents & Guardians,
Welcome back, we hope that you all had a lovely Easter break and didn’t eat too much chocolate. We have a very busy term ahead of us with lots to pack in!
In English, we will be writing a book review. Through these literacy units we will also further improve our sentence structure, grammar and punctuation. In the second part of the term, we will be writing a recount where we will be using adverbials, fronted adverbials and past perfect tense.
In Mathematics, we will be looking at fractions where we will be learning about shape where we will be looking at and measuring angles, position and direction involving coordinates, decimals, volume and converting units including time. The children need to continue to work on their times tables including the ones that they have already focussed on. We ask that they carry on practising them at home by playing TTRS. It would also been appreciated if you could continue to practise their calculation methods with them. We will send out an example of each calculation method to help you.

PE kits
These lessons will be on a Wednesday (indoor) and a Thursday (outdoor)
Children will need: plain black shorts/ joggers and a plain white T shirt. A black hoodie if cold. They will also need suitable active footwear such as trainers or plimsoles for indoor PE.
- PE kits should be in school on a Monday and taken home on a Friday (or leave in school until it needs washing).
If possible, earrings should be removed on P.E. days – if you are unable to take the earrings out, please provide tape for your child’s ears.
Homework
There is a slight change to homework this Year so that we focus on the fundamental skills.
- Your child MUST read either to an adult or independently if they are a level 30/ free reader at least three times a week for at least 20 minutes. At the end of the week they will write a short summary of what they have read.
- They will need to practise the times tables by logging on to TTRS at least three times a week and their progress will be monitored and rewarded.
- They will need to learn and practise weekly spellings that we have focused upon in class. They will have a weekly worksheet to embed the spelling pattern and log in to Spelling Shed, where we will set spelling work for them to practise at least three times a week for our weekly spelling test on a Monday.
Please ensure that all homework is completed and logged in their reading logs which are to be brought into school on Monday where progress and effort will be celebrated and rewarded.
Water Bottles & snacks
Please provide water in a bottle each day for your child to drink in the classroom and after play times to ensure they are well hydrated. Please provide a healthy snack for your child to have at break time each day. These should be completely nut free.
Medical
If your child has asthma, can you please ensure that they bring their inhaler into school so we can keep it in our class medical box.
If you have any questions please feel free to contact us through our year 5 email. Year5@ccsp.risemat.co.uk
Thank you for your continued support.
